UK Identity Cards – change to legislation - January 2011

The government has passed legislation cancelling identity cards for British Citizens. Under the new law identity cards that have already been issued will no longer be legal forms of identification from 21 January 2011.

Driving test candidates with an old-style paper licence will no longer be able to use a UK identity card on test. If a candidate presents for the driving test on or after 21 January 2011 with a UK identity card instead of a passport the test will not go ahead.

The Direct.gov website has details - but has not been updated at the time of writing (10.01.2011).
