CPD seminar - “Psychology and Driveology” - 19th September 2010

A full day CPD seminar presented by Dr Cris Burgess

Update:

Dr Cris Burgess     Dr Cris Burgess

  • Some places remain to attend a very prestigious CPD seminar by a leading figure in the studies of how drivers and riders think. This full days course is aimed at how learners learn and how we coach to get the best from them. The DSA are very keen on the use of coaching and Dr. Cris Burgess can help us in achieving this way of training drivers to be able to concentrate and remain safe on our highways.
  • This is a rare opportunity to attend a presentation from Dr. Cris Burgess, due to the demands for his services, both in this country and abroad. This is surely a presentation that can only enhance our standards and prepare us for the 'check tests' of the future.

The seminar will explore evolutionary processes that demonstrate how poorly adapted human beings are in dealing with the road environment, vehicles, the effects of stress, pressure in modern living, and the short-cuts that we have developed in order to cope with driving situations. The seminar will then look at trainer / pupil interaction and how we can all get the most out of this relationship.

  • Looking at the driving environment from a psychological point of view helps us to understand what influences our driving behaviour and can help us to avoid situations likely to result in a crash.
  • What influences the interaction between novice and ADI; how can this process be optimised?
  • Starting with a description of evolutionary processes, demonstrations of deficiencies in human performance will show how poorly adapted we are to perform the tasks required in operating a vehicle on the public highway.
  • Human adaptation to the demands of modern living produces weaknesses that can lead to performance failure which, when under stress and pressure whilst operating a vehicle on the public road, may result in a crash.
  • Getting the balance right between building confidence and instilling a respect for the risks involved in driving is a difficult task for the driving instructor.
  • Clearly, getting this balance wrong will impact on the safety of your novices and everyone else using the road. Getting the balance right allows them to develop and enhance their own coping skills and allows them to get the most out of the time they spend with you.
  • Borrowing the words of the educationalist Gerald Grow (1991), the central aim of this course is to help you achieve, “…the immensely difficult juggling act of becoming vitally, vigorously, creatively, energetically, and inspiringly unnecessary…”.

About Cris

An applied psychologist at Exeter University, Cris is well renowned and respected by HMG, together with many road safety and training organisations. Amongst his research interests are the profiling of high-risk drivers and riders, the relationship between traffic offending and more ‘mainstream’ criminal activity, and the design of interventions as alternatives to prosecution, using cognitive-behavioural techniques drawn from clinical and health psychology.

He has made numerous appearances on BBC and independent television and radio, and in the national press, talking about his research and advising the makers of driving-related programmes.

His motorcycle offender intervention was adopted in 2007 as the national model by ACPO Roads Policing Committee. This work was highly commended in the 2006 Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards and a national evaluation of the scheme is currently in progress. His recent work investigating social identity influences on uniformed drivers is supported by the Defence Logistics Organisation.

During 2009 Cris was asked to deliver courses to ADIs in Somerset and Cornwall as a part of the DSA’s pilot CPD scheme, managed by GoSkills, the sector skills council for passenger transport. He has also been called upon to advise the DfT’s Road Safety and Campaigns Divisions, the Driving Standards Agency, ACPO-RP, the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety (PACTS), the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers (AIRSO), the Institute of Road Safety Officers (IRSO), the Institute of Highways & Transportation (IHT), the Association of National Driver Improvement Service Providers (ANDISP) Management Group, Norwich Union, the European Secure Vehicle Alliance (ESVA), the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the Defence Logistics Organisation’s Defence Road Safety Committee, Devon & Cornwall Police, the Metropolitan Police and a variety of other blue-light services in England & Wales, as well as Scotland’s Central Traffic Committee, as well as developing marketing materials for the DfT’s Think! Campaign.
