A spoof story stating that the paper counterpart to the driving licence was to be scrapped was reported here on the 12th August 2011.
The spoof was widely reported on many websites.
In response to an enquiry about the article, a spokesman for the DVLA said:

"The article provided by yourself has been passed to our policy department, who advise that currently no decision has been made with regards to withdrawing the paper counterpart of the licence."
